The plunger is pulled in by the solenoid coil to engage the starter drive and bridge the main contacts. A worn or pitted plunger contact face causes a click with no crank or intermittent starting.

Check the length and contact face against your original before fitting. Replacing the solenoid contacts at the same time is recommended. Disconnect the battery before removing the starter.
