Which suspension is right for you?

The two main choices are leaf springs and Duratorque axles. Leaf springs are simple, economical and easy to repair or re-rate by changing the spring pack — a proven, budget-friendly option. A Trojan Duratorque is a rubber torsion axle that springs each wheel independently for a smoother, better-damped ride with almost no maintenance and nothing to rust, which is why they're so popular on boat trailers. If you want the smoothest, lowest-maintenance setup go Duratorque; if you want simple and economical, leaf springs do the job well.

How do I know what capacity or rating I need?

Match your suspension to your trailer's axle rating and its fully loaded weight, with a bit in hand — never under-rate it. Springs are rated per pair and Duratorques per axle. One catch on tandem (twin-axle) trailers: paired axles are de-rated by about 25%, so two 1500kg axles carry roughly 2250kg together, not 3000kg. If you tell us your loaded weight and whether it's single or tandem, we'll get the rating right.

Does trailer suspension affect the WoF?

Yes. Trailers need a WoF, and the suspension is part of it — springs and axles must be secure, correctly mounted, sound, and suited to the load the trailer is rated to carry, with no cracked or broken leaves. This is a guide rather than the final word, so if you're unsure whether yours will pass, have a WoF inspector take a look.
