A normally open relay connects terminal 30 to 87 when its coil (85/86) is energised, so a low-current switch can safely control a high-current load such as driving lamps, horns, fans or pumps. The built-in diode suppresses the voltage spike when the coil switches off, protecting electronic switches and control modules.

Wiring: 30 to fused battery positive, 87 to the load, 86 to the switched positive and 85 to earth. Coil draw is 90mA, and a mounting bracket is fitted. Hella makes more than 100 million relays a year for OEMs including Ford, VW, GM and John Deere.
