A normally open relay connects terminal 30 to 87 when its coil (85/86) is energised, so a low-current switch can safely control a high-current load such as driving lamps, horns, fans or pumps. A resistor across the coil suppresses switching spikes to protect sensitive electronics.

Wiring: 30 to fused battery positive, 87 to the load, 86 to the switched positive and 85 to earth. It has two 4.8mm blade terminals (85 and 86) and two 6.3mm blade terminals. Coil draw is 140mA and there is no mounting bracket. Hella makes more than 100 million relays a year for OEMs including Ford, VW, GM and John Deere.
