A normally open relay connects terminal 30 to 87 when its coil (85/86) is energised, so a low-current switch can safely control a high-current load such as driving lamps, horns, fans or pumps.

Wiring: 30 to fused battery positive, 87 to the load, 86 to the switched positive and 85 to earth. Terminals 30 and 87 are 6mm studs for heavy cable. Coil draw is 180mA, and a mounting bracket is fitted. Hella makes more than 100 million relays a year for OEMs including Ford, VW, GM and John Deere.
