A freewheel pulley has a one-way clutch that drives the alternator under acceleration but lets it overrun when the engine slows. This reduces belt slip, vibration and wear on the belt and tensioner, which matters most on diesel engines. It suits Denso alternators on Toyota D-4D diesels including Hilux.

A rattling belt, chirping at idle or a pulley that turns both ways or locks solid are common signs of failure. Fitting needs the correct splined or Torx tool for the M14x1.5 thread. Check the pulley dimensions and cross-references against the original, and replace the belt and tensioner if they are worn.
